Inserts are units which are designed to "insert" into an existing, code-conforming, wood-burning fireplace (masonry or manufactured zero-clearance). Wood-burning fireplaces that are "open", with or without doors, are inefficient and drafty when not in use. When in use, much of the heat is carried up and lost through the flue.

The existing dimensions of your fireplace opening are what dictate the size and model your space will need. However, true masonry fireplaces offer the option of modifying and customizing the fit and finish, as well as size, of the insert for your fireplace.
Proper Venting Design
Most inserts are designed for, and require, properly-fitted flue liners which attach to the top of the insert and run vertically through the existing fireplace flue to a new termination cap. Flue liners are an important part of the insert package for proper performance.
Gas Log Sets
Another option to an insert is a gas log set, or other burn material such as stone or glass. Additionally, Fireside Stove & Hearth offers custom gas log set design, with optional elecronic flue dampter systems, which eliminate the need for fireplace doors.
